'John Cockburn Shines at Crieff'
Saturday 25 Apr, Blairgowrie traveled west to take part in the annual Crieff 7’s tournament which always proves to be an enjoyable day out each year and this year was no exception. With Blairgowrie having 15 players available for selection a number of them agreed to play for both Blairgowrie and a Crieff ‘7’ led by club coach Alan Webster.
Although not progressing to the finals the Blairgowrie players gave a good account of themselves with tries from Michael Black (2), John Cockburn (2), Duncan Campbell and Ally Walker with some particularly good play by Michael Black, Fraser Bissett and young John Cockburn. With the cup eventually going to a well drilled local team of ex Morrison Academy players there was a special award presented to young John Cockburn for his outstanding play throughout the afternoon. John belied his years with some superb running and a number of try saving tackles against much bigger opponents much to the delight of the on looking crowd.
This now concludes the season for the senior squad and although it has not been the most successful campaign ever experienced all the players have shown towards the end of the season that there is still a desire and a will to compete and hopefully this can be continued next season when they return to Caledonia League Division 2.
On their return to the clubhouse the Blairgowrie players expressed their thanks to coach Alan Webster and also to club captain Ewan Morrison who has led by example throughout the year and has given one hundred percent commitment to the team throughout the season. The senior players now have a break from rugby with training scheduled to restart in July in preparation for the Blairgowrie 10’s tournament which will take place at the J J Coupar Park on Saturday 22nd August.
