With the
Blairgowrie Rugby Club 1st team squad having a free weekend a
seconds match was arranged against a Crieff seconds team. This
was an ideal opportunity for some of the fringe players to make
a claim for a place in the 1st XV squad with a number of Blairgowrie
High School players joining a number of 'veterans' and one or
two 1st team regulars.
With president and 1st team player Gordon Black taking on the
job of referee for the day it was the Blairgowrie boys who went
into an early lead with prop forward Jackie Cockburn scoring the
first try. This early score was quickly followed with further
tries from Andy MacNiven and Tim Watson to make the half time
score Blairgowrie 17 Crieff 0.
From the restart the home side went straight into the attack with
two well taken tries by Michael Black after some good handling
by the young Blairgowrie backs. At this point coach Peter Ireland
introduced a number of fresh players to the game and within minutes
Blairgowrie added to their try count with a try from prop forward
James Buchanan who 'sprinted' at least 2 meters to power over
the try line. Further tries followed from youngster Lawrence Menzies
and Stephen Souter with Crieff scoring a consolation try in the
dying minutes of the game to make the final score Blairgowrie
2nds 48 Crieff 2nds 5.
This was an excellent run out for the young fringe players with
Ricky MacNeil, Lawrence Menzies and Andrew Cowan showing that
they could soon be challenging for a 1st team place. It was also
good to see a number of 'veterans' getting the boots back on with
Hugh Stewart, Ian Rimmer, Jackie Cockburn and Mick Bowen all showing
that they can still play a bit. Man of the Match; James Larsen.
Team: James Buchanan, Tim Watson, Hugh Stewart, Ian Rimmer, Alan
Clarke, Jackie Cockburn, Duncan Ferguson, Mick Bowen, Lawrence
Menzies, Daffyd Jones, Ricky MacNeil, James Larsen, Ben Wilson,
Andrew Cowan, Andy MacNiven, Michael Black, Cally Gordon, Alan
Robertson, Euan Constable, Stephen Souter.
