Last Saturday
the Blairgowrie first team squad travelled to Rosyth for their
league fixture with Fife Southern RFC. In wet and windy conditions
it was Blairgowrie who took the game to the opposition in the
early stages of the game but failed to convert this early pressure
into points missing a penalty after just 5 minutes.
Some ten minutes
later Blairgowrie eventually managed to put points on the board
after centre Fraser Bissett broke through the Fife defence to
allow Ewen Ireland to score under the posts, converted by Stephen
Souter. For the next 10 minutes Blairgowrie continued to pressurise
the home defence and eventually added a second try after some
excellent interposing between the Blairgowrie forwards and backs
allowing Timmy Watson to score in the corner. Fife were not going
to give up easily and minutes before the interval scored a converted
try to make the half time score: Fife Southern 7 Blairgowrie 12.
From the restart Blairgowrie went straight into attack but on
more than one occasion failed to take advantage of the overlap
thus squandering a number of try scoring opportunities. With ten
minutes of the second half gone Ewen Ireland threaded a ball through
the Fife defence with a grubber kick to then out-sprint the Fife
fullback to score under the posts, converted by Stephen Souter.
The Fife boys were quick to respond however with another converted
try after the Blairgowrie backs had failed to clear the ball from
defence. Blairgowrie however always looked to be in command and
with five minutes of the match remaining some excellent driving
play by Kevin Brown and Duncan Campbell allowed Timmy Watson to
drive over under the posts converted by Ewen Ireland thus securing
maximum points and a bonus point for four tries.
This was a hard fought match with the Blairgowrie forwards doing
well to compete against the much bigger and more aggressive Fife
forwards with back row forward Timmy Watson scoring two well deserved
tries. Man of the Match and 3 points - Kev Brown, Gavin Wynd -2
points and Fraser Bissett -1 point.
