Saturday 01
Mar, Blairgowrie RFC travelled to St Andrews where they met the
University students in the third round of the Scottish Hydro Electric
Plate competition having already beaten Stornoway and Aboyne in
the previous rounds.
Despite being the underdogs Blairgowrie took the early initiative
putting the home side under pressure early on in the game but
the game was very much a stop -start affair largely due to the
strong wind and the referee. With both teams trying to make the
best of the conditions it was the home team who went into the
interval with a 3-0 lead.
The second
half proved to be much the same with the game being continuously
interrupted with needless penalties. Midway through the second
half St Andrews increased their lead with a disputed try but despite
this setback Blairgowrie pressed the home defence for long periods
and were twice denied tries when the referee adjudged that the
ball had not been touched down. With ten minutes of the match
remaining and Blairgowrie pressing for a score the St Andrews
winger intercepted to add a second try to make the final score
St Andrews 15 Blairgowrie 0.
Despite being
the underdogs Blairgowrie will be disappointed that they did not
score against the students but credit must go to the whole squad
who gave a one hundred percent effort on the day with both backs
and forwards giving it their all particularly during the last
quarter of the game.
Man of the Match points were awarded as follows; Andrew
Cowan - 1 point, Gordon Black - 2 points and Gavin Wynd - 3 points
and Man of the Match.
