05 Apr 08 the Blairgowrie senior squad had the relatively short
journey to Dundee for their penultimate league match of the season
against Harris FP's. Having already beaten Harris at home earlier
in the season Blairgowrie were hoping to get back to their winning
ways after their first league defeat of the season at Panmure
the previous weekend.
With no referee
appearing for the match both clubs agreed to the Harris coach
refereeing the match rather than postpone the game. Blairgowrie
kicked off the match and the early indications were that both
teams were committed to winning despite this being an end of season
match with some good breaks being made by Alan Robertson and Fraser
Bissett and stand off Euan Ireland using the wind to good effect.
This early
pressure eventually paid off for Blairgowrie with Peter Duncan
scoring in the corner after some good driving by the Blairgowrie
forwards. Blairgowrie then quickly followed up this score with
a second try in the corner only for the referee to disallow the
try as he had not seen the ball being grounded. Harris quickly
responded and after some good work by their No 8 scored a converted
try just before the break to make the half time score Harris 7
Blairgowrie 5.
Harris started the second half strongly scoring a penalty to extend
their lead but Blairgowrie responded with Gavin Wynd splitting
the Harris defence with a mazy run to allow Peter Duncan to score
his second try of the day in the corner. From the resultant kick
off Blairgowrie failed to secure the ball allowing the Harris
no 8 to run in unopposed for a try. At this point some indiscipline
creeped into the game with a number of penalties being given against
Blairgowrie for off side. From a resultant penalty Harris ran
the ball at the Blairgowrie defence but some woeful tackling allowed
Harris to score their fourth try of the afternoon to make the
final score Harris 20 Blairgowrie 10.
This was a disappointing display by the Blairgowrie squad but
it is hoped that the return of back rowers Kev Brown and Duncan
Campbell will get the Blair boys back into winning ways this weekend
in their last league game of the season at home against Montrose
RFC at the J J Coupar
Park.
