26 Apr 08

Saturday 26th Apr 08 a small band of Blairgowrie players and supporters travelled west to partake in the Crieff RFC annual 7's tournament.

Blairgowrie's first pool match was against Pigbarians who are a group of rugby players led by Jim Michie from Dundee who help raise money for children's charities. Blairgowrie started off strongly with Peter Duncan scoring in the corner after some good attacking running by Alan Robertson, Gavin Wynd and Ewen Morrison - converted by Stephen Souter. The 'Pigs' quickly responded with an unconverted try but Blairgowrie ended the first half with a try from Cally Gordon after a good passing move involving Gordon Black and son Michael Black. In the second half Blairgowrie competed well with a third try coming from Stephen Souter after a good passing move involving young John Cockburn making his debut for the seniors. Full time score Blairgowrie 19 Pigbarians 7.

Blairgowrie's second pool match was against a very athletic Linlithgow seven who ran in 6 tries against the less experienced Blairgowrie team with Blairgowrie's only score of the match coming from Stephen Souter after a great run and reverse pass from Peter Duncan.

In the third pool match Blairgowrie came up against a very strong GHA team who ran in 7 tries against the less experienced Blairgowrie squad. However the highlight of this match was when Jake Cockburn scored for Blairgowrie after a lung bursting run by the evergreen Cally Gordon who was caught short of the try line with Jake on hand to pick up the loose ball to score for Blairgowrie.

Team: Peter Duncan, Gavin Wynd, Ewen Morrison, Jake Cockburn, John Cockburn, Gordon Black, Michael Black, Cally Gordon, Alan Robertson, Stephen Souter.

Although Blairgowrie failed to progress to the final stages of the competition a good time was had by all and thanks must go to all at Crieff RFC who once again were excellent hosts with coach Peter Ireland being subjected to a face paint to bring to an end what has been a most successful season for Blairgowrie Rugby Club.

The senior squad now look forward to a well deserved break before training recommences in July for the challenge ahead in National Caledonia League Division 1.

Details of the end of season dinner and presentation of trophies will be announced in due course. The Club Golf Outing will take place this year at Strathmore Golf Club on Saturday 31st May.
