Solid Start to the Season

Saturday 28 Aug 10, Blairgowrie kicked off the new season with a home tie against Kinross RFC in the Caledonia League Division II. With a number of Blairgowrie first team regulars out with injury this was always going to be a difficult match with the visitors applying early pressure straight from the kick off. Blairgowrie suffered an early blow when centre Peter Duncan had to leave the field with a knee injury to be replaced by  former player and coach Alec Watson making a return for Blairgowrie. Within minutes of entering the fray Alec scored Blairgowrie’s first try intercepting a Kinross pass after some excellent work by Davie Grieve and Gavin Wynd. Try converted from the touchline by Stephen Souter. As the game progressed Blairgowrie came more into the game with backs and forwards combining well in attack with debutant Mike Lee making his presence felt early in the game. This play was soon rewarded after Stephen Souter make an excellent break who then in turn passed the ball to the supporting Alan Clarke who in turn fed the ball to the ever present Davie Grieve to score in the corner, once again converted by Stephen Souter. Half time score Blairgowrie 14 Kinross 0.

From the restart it was Kinross who once again applied the early pressure which was rewarded with a try from former Blairgowrie player Duncan Campbell. The home side quickly responded after captain for the day Gavin Wynd took a quick tap penalty drew the defender to release Michael Black to score under the posts converted by Stephen Souter. Kinross responded with an unconverted try but once again the Blairgowrie squad raised their game and following a series of scrums hooker Rory Philip took a ball against the head allowing the ball to be fed out the backline for Michael Black to score his second try and Blairgowrie’s fourth try of the game. Converted by Stephen Souter. With the home side now firmly in control Gavin Wynd went on a mazy run evading a number of tackles before passing the ball to Rory Philip who sprinted the remaining 30 meters to score the try converted by Stephen Souter. With the match coming to a close the home side added a sixth try after yet another break by Gavin Wynd following some good work by John Cockburn who this time released winger Liam Tweedie to score in the corner. Final Score; Blairgowrie 38 Kinross 10.

Team: Mike Lee, Rory Philip, Al Guild, Alan Clarke, Ewan Morrison, Ryan Walker, Russell Edward, Davie Grieve, John Cockburn, Gavin Wynd, Peter Duncan, Michael Black, Laim Tweedie, Michael Grant, Stephen Souter, Alec Watson, Robert Larsen, James Buchanan.

This was a good squad effort from Blairgowrie with every player making a valued contribution to the win something which was reflected in the man of the match awards at the end of the game. It has to be said however that turnout at training could be better and it s still imperative that ALL players attend training on Tuesdays and Thursdays .

Following the match captain for the day Gavin Wynd thanked Kinross and the referee for a good game, Alistair Russell (Balmoral Garage) for sponsoring the match and to Ali MacRae and some of the players for preparing the food for sponsors and teams respectively. Man of the match points were awarded to Davie Grieve  - 3 points, Gavin Wynd - 2 points and all the other 16 players  - 1 point each.

There is no league match this weekend with the next game at home to Madras RFC on Saturday 11 September. Kick off 3.00.
